Description
Jatayu the vulture was a descendant of Vinata.
He was monstrous in size and fought Ravana unarmed though aged, only using his beak and talons to save Sita.
Jatayu managed to eat waya the head of Ravana's pilot and destroyed his aircraft with his mighty wings. He then bit-off Ravana's ten arms in one bite but Ravna later regenerated his ten arms, flew into the air and killed Jatayu by cutting both of his wings,off as well as his flanks and talons.
When lord Rama reached the scene he saw Jatayu agitated in a pool of blood.
He saw him from the distance and mistook him for having eaten Sita.
Rama rushed towards Jatayu armed with his bow and arrow, but when he got close he saw that Jatayu was suffering in pain with his limbs chopped off.
Rama felt extremely guilty for having mistaken his close vulturine friend. He shed tears, let his hair down, set up the pyre and did the funeral rites for Jatayu.
